I am among many individuals who are unfortunate enough to develop a speech impediment in childhood. This article explains why these impediments may come about and how I went about accomplishing fluency. For the intent of this article, I focus on the speech impediment titled stuttering.
There are a lot of reasons why individuals may develop a stutter, it can be as an effect of bullying from school, an over aggressive family member, a shock response to an event such as a car crash, or it could be passed down from another family member who has a stutter.
I’ve met a lot of people who stutter as I now assist people to attain fluency as a career. I always ask them to discuss how and why their stutter began. The reasons above are the type of answers I get.
Stuttering typically develops in childhood and nine out of ten people who stutter are men. Around 1% of the population has a stutter according to recent reports.
I have now managed to overcome my stutter which had pretty much destroyed my life for eighteen years. When I had a stutter, I found it hard to pronounce certain words starting with certain letters. I’d always avoid these words or I’d come up with an different word to say.
Age twenty-two I determined it was time to attempt to defeat my communication issues. I began to observe what I addressed very good fluent speakers, I was observing and attempting to figure out how they were talking and breathing. I also attempted to find divergences between their speech and mine. I also began to read books about things such as, positive thinking and mind over matter as I also realised I had to alter the way I was thinking.
After almost a year of working and practicing very hard, I managed to beat my stutter, very much to my alleviation. As a career I now aid other people to achieve fluency by running one to one speech courses from my home in Birmingham. A also offer a self help ebook and seventy minute dvd for people who are unable to attend the courses.
